My favourite part of the job is testing out new technology. We are always looking for ways to get patient results out faster, and therefore improve the experience for patients, and help them to get better quicker. When we test out the new tech, we have to go through a process called verification. We test bacteria on the new machine that we already know the results of, and then compare the results to the old method to see if they compare. I really enjoy designing and writing the verification, it’s a similar process to doing experiments in science lessons.

I love learning new things, one of the best feelings you can have is a โ€˜eurekaโ€™ moment – when you have been thinking about a problem and suddenly see the solution, or you make a connection between things so everything becomes clearer – I get a real adrenaline buzz! I also love helping other people to achieve these moments too, by suggesting things that might direct their thinking. I also have great pride in seeing students excel, there are people out there who I inspired into studying prehistory when they started their first year of their undergraduate degrees, who I supported and taught through their degrees, their Masters and even their PhDs, and who are now lecturers at universities around the globe, themselves inspiring new generations!!

My favourite part of my job is actually designing and carrying out the virtual reality therapy treatments with people with mental heath conditions. I enjoy helping out with the treatment itself and the data collection process i.e. asking participants to complete questionnaires and interviews. This is a lot of fun for me and takes me out of the office! When you can see the positive changes it is making to someone’s wellbeing, that is the most rewarding feeling and you can see your hard work paying off ๐Ÿ™‚

My favorite part is working with project students, they come up with these amazing research ideas but they aren’t sure how to put them into practice. It’s really rewarding to watch them develop and it also makes me develop as a scientist ๐Ÿ˜€
